A number of national activists in South Azerbaijan have issued a statement on the situation of Azerbaijani political prisoners and the wishes of the people. The statement said:
“As a number of South Azerbaijani national activists living in Tabriz, we call on the Tehran authorities to stop their biased policies against the people and geography of South Azerbaijan without delay. Let them take measures to create conditions for the realization of the legal rights of the people of South Azerbaijan. Otherwise, you will go down in history as a newly awakened dragon named after the Turkish people of South Azerbaijan. The Tehran government must fulfill the following requirements without delay and unconditionally:
1. The immediate release of all political prisoners in South Azerbaijan under these coronavirus conditions;
2. Recognition of the right to self-determination for the Turkic people of South Azerbaijan and the application of the law thereon;
It should be noted that political prisoners in South Azerbaijan, including Mr. Latif Hasani, Abbas Lisani, Alirza Farshi and Yusif Kari, are being held in a prison where coronavirus is prevalent.
According to reports, Mr. Abbas Lisani and Yusif Kari were placed in the Behdari ward of the Ardabil prison due to illness.
