National activist Behnam Sheikh has been released on bail

Evin Prison

Behnam Sheikhi, along with Alireza Farshi and Hamid Manafi Nadarli, other Azerbaijani civil activists, were arrested in Tehran on July 22, 2010 and transferred to Evin Prison to serve two years in prison.

Mr. Sheikhi has been sent on leave for a week with the deposit of a bail bond (legal receipt) and with the consent of the Judgment Enforcement Unit of Baharestan (Tehran).

Behnam Sheikhi, an Azerbaijani civil activist, told his family by phone that he had a high fever and chills and suspicious symptoms. And the prison health service has given him only a few painkillers.

According to statements made by Alireza Farshi and Behnam Sheikhi after contacting their families, the activists were severely beaten at the time of their detention for failing to provide a legal order, following the resistance of Mr. Farshi and Mr. Sheikhi.

Numerous reports indicate that the practice is prevalent in most security cases where officers refuse to issue arrest warrants when detaining political and ideological activists, and that detainees’ resistance to this illegal act results in physical contact.

Earlier, Branch 54 of the Tehran Court of Appeals issued a verdict against “Akbar Azad, Alireza Farshi, Behnam Sheikhi and Hamid Monafi Nadarli”; Four Turkish activists were sentenced to two years in prison and two years in exile for attending World Mother Language Day.

On Monday, August 11, following the appearance of coronary symptoms among the inmates of Ward 3 of Evin Prison, Mr. Sheikhi, along with Mr. Farshi and Mr. Manafi and 27 other political prisoners in this ward, sat down and locked themselves in the prison yard and demanded immediate attention to the situation. On Thursday, August 14th, a number of political prisoners detained in Ward 8 of Evin Prison wrote a letter of protest to enlighten public opinion and react to the broadcast of the report in the 20:30 news segment, which was broadcast on Islamic Republic TV Channel 2.
