Is Iran trying to reconcile with Azerbaijan?

Karabakh war

The Karabakh war is finally over, and with the signing of the ceasefire agreement, the countries have entered a new phase. Since the beginning of the war, Iran has openly and fully sided with Armenia.

However, over time, he had to change the attitude of the Azerbaijani nation, especially in Iran, despite the apparent protests. Thus, at first, he reiterated his claims to be with Azerbaijan with extensive propaganda within Iran. But in the end, Iran remained the only country that kept its borders open with Armenia.
Everything in politics is changing very fast. Everything changed rapidly in the Karabakh issue as well. Nothing went ahead of who Iran wanted and expected. The Azerbaijani army imposed its will on Armenia and reclaimed the occupied territories.

It is clear that the Tehran government has met expectations from the Russians. Because from the very beginning, the Iranian press wrote that Russia would face Azerbaijan, or at least hoped so. But in the end, things changed and Azerbaijan achieved a historic victory. The Tehran government saw itself as a complete loser, especially after the Nakhchivan corridor was revealed. Threats and reprimands against Turkey in Iran did not end, but the truth did not change, and Turkey was able to connect to the Turkic world through the Nakhchivan corridor. But there is another point that worries Iran.

Thus, Iran completely lost its political power in the Caucasus and was officially exported from the region. However, Iran’s defeat did not end there, and it was on the verge of serious economic opportunities. The Azerbaijani government has said it will carry out landscaping and settlement work in the rapidly liberated territories of Karabakh. Thanks to years of provocation by Armenia, all the cities that survived the occupation were destroyed. In a sense, this means that there is a serious construction work.

In other words, there is a serious and high-level job opportunity and economic opportunity on the northern border of Iran. However, due to its hostility to Azerbaijan, Iran stayed away from this opportunity. In short, Iran, unable to protect Armenia, is forced to accept what is happening now. Therefore, turning 180 degrees, it approaches Azerbaijan and tries to take advantage of Karabakh’s construction and development projects economically.
Recently, the Iranian ambassador to Baku has been trying to reconcile with the Azerbaijani situation with several important meetings. The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Iran also spoke by video conference and tried to reconcile the two countries.

It is also clear that the Republic of Azerbaijan, especially Ilham Aliyev, wants to avoid shortages with Iran and sends friendly messages. However, there is also the fact that Iran cannot compete with Turkish companies and businessmen. Although Iran has geographical advantages, it is impossible to compete with Turkey in terms of investment and technology. Experience also shows that the difficulties and corruption in Iran’s administration are a serious obstacle for independent businessmen to go to Azerbaijan, although Turkey does not have such a problem, and all this weakens the position of Iran in the Karabakh market for Turkey.

Over time, it will become clear how successful Iran can be diplomatically, but we must not forget that the more economic ties between the south and the north of Azerbaijan, the more the national spirit will spread, and in any case the Azerbaijani nation will win again.
