Prisoners go on hunger strike in Urmu prison to protest the spread of the coronavirus and the negligence of prison officials.

Nearly 140 women detainees in the central prison of Urmu have been on a hunger strike since the begining of Mordad to protest the integration of coronanirus infected prisoners with the general prison population, the lack of medical care and the denial of hospital treatment.

At least four female prisoners currently infected with the coronavirus remain in the women’s ward with other inmates.

On the 23rd of Mordad, news agencies reported the resurgence of the coronavirus in the women’s ward of the Urmu prison.

The ANT reports that the coronavirus is widespread in Iranian prisons, and that Iran and international human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that the lives and health of prisoners held in Iranian prisons are endangered. However, the Iranian authorities do not pay any attention to the conditions of detention of prisoners.
