Amnesty International has called for immediate action to release an Azerbaijani activist in Iran

Abbas Lisani

Amnesty International has launched a “call for urgent action” campaign, calling for the release of Abbas Lisani, a political and cultural activist of Azerbaijani Turks imprisoned in Iran.

Amnesty International has launched a “call for urgent action” campaign, sending a letter to all human rights activists to the head of the Iranian judiciary, Ibrahim Raisi, urging him to release Abbas Lisani, a political activist of Azerbaijani Turks sentenced to long prison terms in Iran.

Amnesty International reports that Abbas Lisani’s sentence has been increased to 15 years.

“Azerbaijani Turkish activist Abbas Lisani, who was arbitrarily detained in the Ardabil prison, was unfairly sentenced by the Court of Appeal and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The Court of Appeals was presided over by a judge who had previously been charged with prosecuting Abbas Lisani. In July 2020, the Supreme Court of Iran rejected the appeal to reconsider the case of the Azerbaijani activist.

Amnesty International believes that the case against Abbas Lisani is politically motivated, based on a long history of defending the rights of Azerbaijani Turks in Iran. He has faced numerous arrests and harassment in the past on unfounded political allegations based on those political goals. Authorities also persecuted his family by ordering the closure of a jewelry repair shop, which had a very negative impact on the living conditions and financial situation of the national activist’s family.
