Arab people in southwestern Iran have been suffering from water shortages and sandstorms for more than a decade

A number of Iranian government officials and domestic media outlets report on the role of the People's Republic of China in drying up the Hur Al-Azim Marshland. They claim that your country has a contract with the Iranian government for the extraction of oil and gas, which is conditional on the drying up of the Iranian part of Hur al-Azim.

Honorable President of the People’s Republic of China

Your excellency President Xi,

Arab people in southwestern Iran have been suffering from water shortages and sandstorms for more than a decade. This phenomenon is most severe in the area of the Karkheh river and its estuary, the Hur Al-Azim Marshland. One of the most important factors driving these environmental changes is the drying up of the Iranian part of Hur Al-Azim Marshland. This has terrible economic and social consequences for the lives of thousands of residents in that area, as well as impacting residents of other cities and villages in Khuzestan province (Ahwaz region). This situation led to widespread protests in the second half of July this year, with more than a dozen people killed and hundreds injured and imprisoned. The wider world is increasingly demonstrating sympathy with the people of this region as they experience the grief of thirst and drought.

A number of Iranian government officials and domestic media outlets report on the role of the People’s Republic of China in drying up the Hur Al-Azim Marshland. They claim that your country has a contract with the Iranian government for the extraction of oil and gas, which is conditional on the drying up of the Iranian part of Hur al-Azim. Our request is that, if these statements are true, you would please explain to the Arab people and other minority nationalities of Iran why you are involved in such a harmful act. If these reports are incorrect, we request that you formally confirm that your country is not involved.

China has an ancient civilization that has long contributed to human thought, culture, and economics, and is now a signatory to the 2015 Paris Agreement on the need to prevent environmental changes. Therefore, we look forward to your government’s response to our request, which is the question of millions of Iranians, so that the truth becomes clear to everyone.

Respectfully yours,
