Trump warns Iranian leaders not to kill demonstrators

President Trump tweeted support to protesters in Iran, warning the country’s leaders not to kill demonstrators who took to the streets after the government admitted it had “unintentionally” shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet earlier this week.

The British ambassador to Iran was also briefly arrested on Saturday, the State Department said. Robert Macaire, the British envoy, was released shortly after he was identified, Iran’s deputy foreign minister said on Sunday.

Mr. Trump said Friday that four U.S. embassies, including the American Embassy in Baghdad, were targeted in a planned attack orchestrated by Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in an American drone strike last week. The president made the new comments in a Fox News interview as his administration faces pressure to provide more information about the imminent threat Iran’s top general posed that justified the U.S. strike.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper told “Face the Nation” that he “didn’t see” specific evidence showing such a plot against U.S. embassies but said he believed Iran was “going to go after our embassies.”
