Analysis of Foreign Policy: Without Russia’s help to Armenia, Azerbaijan is in a superior position in Nagorno-Karabakh

Nagorno-Karabakh

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan opened his cards by chanting nationalist and militarist slogans and refusing to negotiate, and Vladimir Putin took no steps to save him.

The resumption of hostilities in the Azerbaijani territories occupied by the Armenian armed forces was predicted.

The four-day clashes in the Tovuz region of northwestern Azerbaijan, 60 miles from Nagorno-Karabakh in mid-July this year, are not the main reason for today’s wars.

Worst of all, despite the periodic clashes in April 2016, the current situation remained the same as last month. The entire occupied region makes up 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territory. At least four UN Security Council resolutions (822, 853, 874, and 884) ratified in 1993 call for the immediate withdrawal of Armenian troops from all occupied territories.

About 800,000 Azerbaijanis have been subjected to ethnic cleansing in these areas. Another 200,000 were expelled from Armenia.

Negotiations on resolving the conflict took a long time. Over the years, Azerbaijan has repeatedly warned that if the peace process drags on, the use of force will be the last resort.
