Urgent Measures Required to Cease Repression of Qara Qishlaq Village Protesters
Toronto, January 13, 2024 – The Association for the Defence of Azerbaijani Political Prisoners in Iran(ADAPP) urgently calls for international attention and intervention in response to the brutal crackdown on an environmental protest in Qara Qishlaq village of Salmas, located in the West Azerbaijan province of Iran.
On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, Iranian security forces violently dispersed a peaceful gathering opposing the construction of the Kaveh Soda’s chemical plant, affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The use of tear gas, batons, shotguns, and colored bullets resulted in the arrest of 70 participants, including 22 known to ADAPP.
In a recent update, villagers revealed that elderly individuals, including Rahim Talebi (85), Gholam Haqit (80), and others, were released on bail after temporary detention. Disturbing reports of threats emerged, indicating that detained women of the village were threatened with rape, later released after three nights of detention.
Many villagers sustained injuries during the Iranian security forces’ shooting, with Saifullah Panahzadeh facing potential vision damage, and Hossein Karimi deemed at risk if a bullet lodged in his throat is removed. The protesters opposed the Kaveh Soda company’s plans, fearing environmental damage and water scarcity due to the company’s construction.
Background:
Kaveh Soda Company’s history of environmental negligence in Maragheh, including polluting water sources and contributing to health issues, raises concerns about its expansion in Qara Qishlaq village. Despite warnings, the company persists in damaging the environment and exploiting resources.
ADAPP identifies Colonel Reza Asadi as the main field commander responsible for the attack and calls for an immediate investigation into those who ordered the use of force. The Iranian government must compensate victims, accept legal responsibility, and cease prosecuting environmental defenders.
Despite environmental protests, West Azerbaijan TV announced the opening of the new Kaveh Soda company. ADAPP is holding the Iranian government accountable for neglecting regulations. ADAPP demands an immediate halt to Kaveh Soda’s activities in affected provinces.
ADAPP urges the international community, including the United Nations and human rights organizations, to monitor and prevent harm to local communities. The Islamic Republic’s actions, contributing to environmental disasters and cultural threats, require immediate attention.
