As a continuation of the illegal actions of the Islamic Republic of Iran against Azerbaijani national-cultural activists, the Supreme Court of Iran, the largest judicial body has issued an unfair and unacceptable verdict against Mr Abbas Lisani, one of the most prominent figures of the Azerbaijani national movement.
Mr Abbas Lisani’s lawyer, Seyyed Mohammadreza Faqihi was sentenced to 15 years in prison on June 4, 2020.
The lack of an independent judiciary in Iran has led to general pressure and injustice against political and cultural activists in South Azerbaijan and continuing abuses of Azerbaijani people`s human rights due to a lack of judicial reform. The judiciary system which is unable to enforce the law has become a tool to oppress Azerbaijanis.
The suppression of Azerbaijani activists by the Islamic Republic of Iran through the use of water by the judiciary revealed not only the essence of the judiciary’s dependence on the state but also the lack of rule of law and widespread injustice.
As the world’s worst human rights abuser, the Islamic Republic of Iran is using the forces of the Iranian Ministry of Security, SEPAH and the police to crack down on Azerbaijanis’ democratic and human rights demands and seek to stifle the call for justice in the judiciary.
Mr Abbas Lisani, one of Azerbaijan’s national-cultural activists, who has always relied on cultural activities for the rights of his people and supported the principles of the rule of law was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the government for improper enforcement and monopoly of the judiciary on June 4. The baseless charges against him, on the one hand, and the lack of an independent court to hear his charges, on the other, are the indications that the proceedings against him are obscure.
Knowing the details of the case against Abbas Lisani, the Central Party of Azerbaijan supports the idea that Mr Lisani has never been judged in an impartial court and also the verdicts against him are unproven and illegal and all of these are the results of the judges` dependence on the state.
The Central Party of Azerbaijan condemns the actions of the Supreme Court of Iran against Mr Abbas Lisani, saying that such actions have undermined the reliability of the judiciary and increased general distrust of this body.
