Mayor of Maragha Mahammadrza Ahmadi was arrested on January 5 by the forces of the East Azerbaijan Information Department.
According to reports, the chief executive was arrested on charges of financial misconduct. East Azerbaijani court officials say a case has been opened. No charges were filed or details of the case were released.
The Fars news agency near Sipah said other people were also likely to be arrested in connection with the case.
