Copper resources of Varzigan’s Sungun Madani have increased by 1.6 billion tons

Allahverdi Dehgani

MP Varzigan said that with new developments, the copper resources of the Sungun mine have increased by 1.6 billion tons, making it the largest copper mine in Iran.

Allahverdi Dehgani, a member of the Iranian Parliament’s Arts and Mining Commission, said that this amount was not final, adding that 1.6 billion tons of copper had been identified at the Sungun copper mine, which is still found at 1,100 meters. According to Dehgani, copper sources can be found at a depth of 300 meters in the Sungun mine. Dehgani also said that the copper content of the stomach is currently 0/7 percent, and that it has risen to 1 percent in deeper depths, which is good news.

MP Varzigan said that Sungun is currently the country’s largest copper mine and that new developments are possible in the coming decades.

According to this MP, the Süngün mine, which had a source of 400 million tons in 1392, has been reduced to 1.6 billion tons today by the work of the Ministry of Arts, Mines and Trade.
Dehgani Varzigan said that there are more copper resources. “I am confident that if the development continues, the resources will reach 2 billion tons.” he said.

According to Allahverdi Dehgani, currently 300,000 tons of copper concentrate is produced annually, which is logical due to this large source and should be increased. Dehgani also pointed out that the copper produced and sold in Varzigan is at the raw level and is much cheaper than its real value.

The vast majority of copper mines, known as the savior of Iran in these years of oil embargoes, are in Azerbaijan. However, as there is no large-scale industry in Azerbaijan, the wealth extracted from the mines is transported hundreds of kilometers to different parts of Iran. Despite all these riches, Varzigan is considered one of the poorest cities in Azerbaijan, deprived of even the first necessary opportunities. For example, the earthquake in Garadagh in 1391 caused great loss of life, not even a single hospital in Varzigan.
