Air pollution has increased in Iran. This situation is more widespread in South Azerbaijan, especially in the city of Tabriz. Air pollution is a major risk factor for children and the elderly, especially at a time when coronavirus infection is spreading rapidly.
This situation, which appears every year, is not solved due to the negligence of the relevant agencies. In times of low rainfall, the situation is even more serious. Air pollution is related to the use of gas by electric power plants. It should be noted that gas companies prefer to use this fuel because it is sold at a lower price. However, when this substance is released into the atmosphere, it quickly pollutes the air.
In recent years, Iran has been unable to sell gas, which has led to excessive gas storage in the country’s energy resources. Therefore, the Iranian government prefers to use products that it cannot sell as fuel. This situation has been causing legitimate dissatisfaction of the population for days. Social media users are trying to express their protests under the headline “Do not burn gas.”
Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh made a statement on the issue. He said that there were no conditions for fuel storage because the gas was not sold. In this case, he stressed that the substance was used as fuel. Isa Kalantari, head of the Environmental Protection Agency, also said that “either electricity or air pollution” must be chosen.
