Parviz Shahbazov

Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia have begun preparing a feasibility study for a project to establish an electricity corridor between the three countries. The statement came from Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov.

With the consent of the relevant energy agencies of the three countries, a consulting company was selected and the feasibility study for the joint project was prepared, Shahbazov said.

It should be noted that Russia has great potential for electricity exports in the region. In this regard, Iran has expressed interest in importing from Russia to meet the country’s electricity needs in a stable manner. Azerbaijan has been selected as a country with transit opportunities between the two countries. Earlier, Georgia and Armenia, as well as Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan acted as transit electricity between Russia and Iran.

The Minister also said that the role of Azerbaijan as an exporter and transit country in the format of cooperation with Russia, Georgia, Turkey and Iran is strengthening.

If in 2006 1.8 billion kWh of electricity was imported to fully meet the domestic needs of the country, in 2019 this figure decreased to 136.9 million kWh. Exports have tripled in 10 years to 1.5 billion kWh.

The Minister also said that 104.3 million kWh of electricity was imported and 841.9 million kWh of electricity was exported during the first nine months of this year. At the same time, 450.2 million kWh of electricity was exported from Azerbaijan to Georgia, 92.5 million kWh to Russia, 101.8 million kWh to Turkey and 197.4 million kWh to Iran.

During the reporting period, electricity imports amounted to 64.7 million kWh from Russia, 22.8 million kWh from Iran and 16.8 million kWh from Georgia.
